"Honoring Traditions: Día de los Muertos"
2022 Community Celebration: Sep 14–Oct 29, 2022
As part of SVMoA’s commitment to serving the whole of our community, The Museum has been working with a small group of Hispanic/Latinx valley residents over the last two years to generate bilingual arts programs for adults and families and to create opportunities to honor cultural traditions. This September and October, SVMoA invites the entire community to join in a celebration of Día de los Muertos and a full calendar of related activities.
With roots in the pre-Columbian past, Día de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead) is one of Mexico’s most significant holidays. Families gather to welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a reunion that includes food, drink, prayer and parades. As part of the festivities, families and communities create altars to honor loved ones they’ve lost.
This fall, SVMoA celebrates Día de los Muertos with two months of events involving artists, authors, live music and classes for people of all ages. The 2-month program culminates in a Día de los Muertos celebration on Saturday, October 29, with a display of Day of the Dead altars created by community partners at SVMoA’s Hailey House. The free outdoor event includes traditional food provided by The Hunger Coalition and a concert with Jarabe Mexicano.
SVMoA’s Community Celebration “Honoring Traditions: Día de los Muertos,” is made possible in part through a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Democracy demands wisdom.
