ARTIST TALK: with Sara Siestreem (Hanis Coos)

Weaving in Community

Thursday, May 23, 2024 - 6:00 PM

Immediately following the Evening Exhibition Tour on May 23, SVMoA will host a virtual artist talk with Sara Siestreem. The talk will be open to visitors to the museum and participants who can join in online.

Sara Siestreem (Hanis Coos) is a multidisciplinary artist from the Umpqua River Valley on the South Coast of Oregon who works in painting, photography, printmaking, weaving, and large-scale installation. Siestreem combines the ceremonial traditions of her ancestors with contemporary modes and materials at the intersection of social and ecological justice, education, and Indigenous feminism. In addition to the artwork that is part of SVMoA’s exhibition Intertwined: Weaving in Community, Siestreem will discuss the self-sustaining weaving program she has created for the Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians, and the program’s work to repair communities and heal the relationship between humans and the environment. Siestreem is represented by Elizabeth Leach Gallery in Portland.

Part of SVMoA’s exhibition Intertwined: Weaving in Community.
