Intro to Oil Painting

Tuesday, April 21, 2026 - 5:30 PM

Have you ever been curious about working with oil paints? Ever wondered why some artists choose to paint with oils versus acrylics? Join SVMoA staff member and practicing artist Elise Christie for a two-night workshop and learn some tips and techniques for working with oil paints. Explore color theory, how to incorporate shadows and highlights, and some ecofriendly ways to clean up after.

As part of the workshop, oil paints will not only be provided, but participants will be able to take some of their paints home. A list of places to purchase other supplies discussed during the workshop will be provided.

Class will take place from 5:30-7:30pm at the Ketchum Classroom in the Museum

About the Artist

Elise Christie is an artist and SVMoA employee who works predominantly with oil paint, as well as printmaking, pen and ink, and watercolor. She grew up visiting family in Sun Valley and moved to the valley full time after receiving a degree in Painting from UC Santa Barbara’s College of Creative Studies. She assisted artist Ethan Murrow in the painting and installation of his mural “The Engineer” on SVMoA’s north wall in 2025. She is interested in capturing the beauty of everyday mundane objects, moments, and interactions, as well as the ever-changing light and colors of the valley’s landscape.
