ADULT CLASS: Geology Hike—The Pioneer Mountain Core

This several hour hike along a maintained trail affords spectacular views of the sedimentary cover and metamorphic core of the Pioneer Mountains, southeast of Ketchum. In this glaciated terrane, rocks are fresh and easy to see.
Plus the complex structure of the mountains surrounds us. Join ISU Geologist Paul Link for this superb walking tour.
- 3 hour hike up first 2/3 of Hyndman Creek Trail
- Moderate hike
- Total round trip about 5 miles
- Elevation gain 900'
Driving directions: turn on East Fork Road, we will meet at the parking lot to the North at intersection of East Fork Road and Hwy. 75. From there we will shuttle as a group to the trail head. Drive out East Fork 5.5 miles and road will turn to dirt at little town of Triumph, continue, at fork turn left and continue till end of road.
This class takes place Sat, September 12, 9am—12pm
Age and ability: 14yrs and older, moderate hike
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Paul Link has taught geology at Idaho State University since 1980. He and graduate students worked extensively in the Sun Valley area as part of a USGS project from 1985 to 1993. Paul is a coauthor on the 2012 Idaho Geologic Map. He is a regional sedimentary geologist and has supervised over 100 Master of Science theses at ISU.
